Long-run change

The renewable share of total final energy rose 1.9 percentage points from 1990 to 2024

It increased from 27.9% to 29.8%. The small change helps explain why electrifying transport and industrial heat remains distinct from making electricity generation renewable.

Annual variability

Renewable electricity fell from 88.1% in 2023 to 85.5% in 2024

Lower hydro inflows increased non-renewable generation in 2024. The long-run electricity share is higher than in 1990, but the path is not a steady annual improvement.

Annual renewable shares for electricity generation and total final energy consumption from 1990 to 2024.

Electricity generation and total final energy consumption are different denominators. The final-energy measure includes direct renewable use plus electricity consumption allocated to renewables. Historical values follow MBIE's published indicator series; 2023 and 2024 endpoints use the latest Energy in New Zealand 2025 release and may be revised. The 2026 report is available, but this historical comparison retains the 2025 vintage pending reconciliation of differing final-energy renewable shares in the new overview and renewables chapters.

Next expected update: 20 August 2026

The two series use different denominators. Total final energy covers energy consumed by end users; it is not a subset of the electricity-generation percentage.
