Daily balancing
Batteries shift energy across short periods
They can absorb low-price generation and respond quickly to peaks. Storage duration determines how long that support lasts.
Dry-year security
Extended low-hydro periods are a longer-timescale problem
Short-duration batteries do not remove the need for firm supply, flexible demand, or deeper storage during low-hydro periods lasting weeks or months.

Balancing the system at different timescales

Renewable generation that could have been produced but is reduced or not used because supply, demand, storage, or network conditions cannot absorb it at that time. and low-hydro periods require different responses.
