Electricity generation and demand

MBIE
Data through
March 2026 quarter
Last checked
2026-07-14
Next expected
10 September 2026

Quarterly electricity generation and demand through March 2026.

Definitions and limitations

Generation groups follow MBIE's quarterly electricity tables. Other renewables combines biogas, wood, and waste heat; non-renewables combines oil, coal, and gas.

Wholesale electricity prices

Electricity Authority
Data through
June 2026
Last checked
2026-07-14
Next expected
Monthly

Monthly national demand-weighted final wholesale spot prices from January 2019 to June 2026.

Definitions and limitations

Prices are nominal New Zealand dollars per megawatt-hour and are weighted by electricity demand.

Grid-connected solar capacity

Electricity Authority
Data through
9 February 2026
Last checked
2026-07-14

Operating grid-connected solar capacity and the announced 2026/27 project pipeline.

Definitions and limitations

Announced pipeline capacity is not yet operating. Projects can be delayed, changed, or cancelled.

Historical light-fleet electrification

Ministry of Transport via Figure.NZ
Data through
February 2026
Last checked
2026-07-14

Historical light-fleet electrified share through February 2026.

Definitions and limitations

The series combines battery-electric and plug-in-hybrid light vehicles. It remains separate from the differently classified current NZTA snapshot.

Current vehicle fleet

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi
Data through
30 June 2026
Last checked
2026-07-14
Next expected
Monthly

Current registered passenger-car/van and light-commercial fleet by motive power.

Definitions and limitations

Passenger means the NZTA Passenger Car/Van vehicle type. Light commercial means Goods Van/Truck/Utility with gross vehicle mass up to 3,500 kg or class NA. Electrified combines electric, range-extended electric, fuel-cell electric, and plug-in-hybrid motive types.

Process heat

EECA
Data through
August 2024 publication
Last checked
2026-07-14

Mapped process-heat demand and emissions across 713 sites.

Definitions and limitations

The database focuses on sites with fossil-fuelled primary heat equipment above 500 kW. Underlying site observations span multiple survey years, mainly 2021-2023.

Grid connection outlook

Transpower
Data through
8 July 2026
Last checked
2026-07-14

Generation and load projects being delivered through Transpower's connection pipeline.

Definitions and limitations

Project counts and capacity are delivery-pipeline figures, not commissioned generation.

Generation investment pipeline

Electricity Authority
Data through
October 2025
Last checked
2026-07-14

Generation investment pipeline status at October 2025.

Definitions and limitations

The broad pipeline is distinct from committed or under-construction projects; not all proposed capacity will proceed.

Grid-scale battery status

Electricity Authority
Data through
19 May 2026
Last checked
2026-07-14

Operating, under-construction, and announced grid-scale batteries.

Definitions and limitations

Megawatts measure discharge power; megawatt-hours measure stored energy. Status categories must not be added as though all capacity is operating.

Renewable generation spill

Electricity Authority
Data through
9 March 2026
Last checked
2026-07-14

Renewable spill, low-price periods, flexible demand, and batteries.

Definitions and limitations

Used to explain why some renewable output is not used when supply exceeds demand or network and storage limits bind.

Waiinu Energy Project

Fast-track New Zealand
Data through
15 June 2026
Last checked
2026-07-14

Proposed integrated wind, solar, and battery project.

Definitions and limitations

Referral into the fast-track process is not approval or a final investment decision.

Very-high-temperature heat pumps

EECA
Data through
20 April 2026
Last checked
2026-07-14

Demonstration support for industrial heat-pump projects at or above 85 C.

Definitions and limitations

The initiative offered co-funding for demonstrations; it is not deployed national capacity.

Solid-state hydrogen storage research

MBIE
Data through
23 April 2026
Last checked
2026-07-14

Research including solid-state hydrogen storage materials at the University of Waikato.

Definitions and limitations

This is research funding, not a commercial storage project.

Methods and interpretation rules
  • Each visible series is tied to a named public source and coverage period.
  • Electricity generation and demand use MBIE's March 2026 quarterly release. Wholesale prices use the Electricity Authority's final monthly national demand-weighted series.
  • The current transport composition is derived from NZTA's cleaned 30 June 2026 vehicle-level snapshot. The historical trend remains separate because its classification differs.
  • Process-heat figures describe EECA's mapped large fossil-fuelled heat sites, not every industrial heat load in New Zealand.
  • Outlook items retain delivery statuses so operating, under-construction, proposed and research activity are not presented as equivalent.
  • Political promises require manual review of official party sources before publication.
